About

Richard Craig

Richard studied clarinet and composition at the Sydney Conservatorium, graduating as Student of the Year and did postgraduate study at the University of York in the UK, then established himself as a freelance clarinettist and saxophonist in London and the south of England.

Richard was trained as an instrument repairer at the world famous woodwind maker TW Howarth and Co, repairing in their London showrooms and later finishing new instruments for their factory in Worthing. Continuing his work with Howarths, he set up his own business in England which he ran for fifteen years, counting many top professional players and teachers among his customers (see testimonials).

He returned to his native Sydney in 2007 with his wife Celia Craig and their two children. He initially set up his own business in Springwood, Lower Blue Mountains, before the family moved to Adelaide in 2011 when Celia won the Principal Oboe position with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Richard is now in demand by players from all over Australia, New Zealand and the UK. His skills are in maintaining efficient, reliable, airtight instruments, and always listening to his clients’ needs, including booking in and completing jobs on schedule to suit busy people (this includes students, teachers and parents as well as professional players!) Instruments regularly maintained by Richard stand out in quality and reliablility.

Richard played saxophones and clarinets with the internationally acclaimed British amplified new music ensemble Icebreaker, becoming Musical Director in 2000. Highlights include performances in Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, tours of Holland, UK and the USA, and appearances at Europe’s major music festivals. Icebreaker have recorded ten cds, often co-produced by Richard.

“There used to  be classical musicians, jazz musicians and rock musicians; now, if Icebreaker is any guide, there are just musicians…” -The Birmingham Post.

“something powerfully unusual which will leave you swept off your feet by tingling, bizarre ensemble sounds and high-octane rhythms … endlessly creative and full of surprises” -The Scotsman
